1st AI In Finance Awards – Winners announcement


London, 16 October 2018 – Following on from the success of the 'AI in Finance' course, the Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CFTE) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) devised an assignment to help learners apply expertise gained from the online course into developing  real-world business ideas promoting AI in Finance.

Philippe Watson, a member of the judging panel, remarked on the submissions: "What a fantastic set of submissions! Quite impressed with the overall standard, and no shortage of good use cases. In most cases I was really surprised by how structured and well thought through the submissions were."

WINNERS OF THE AI IN FINANCE AWARDS
Celebrating the best participants of the AI in Finance course, the awards honour commitment and ingenuity in the CFTE community. It delivers on the promise made to make your AI idea a reality, and connects the team of experts associated with CFTE with genuine talents who otherwise may not have a voice.

We are  proud to announce the three winners of the inaugural AI Awards, as follows:

Clarence Chan Wei Tak: Vice President of the Asian Investment Banking Division at MUFG Bank in Singapore, he is rewarded for his paper on "Preparing for Death - Optimizing Estate Planning"

Pouya Jamshidiat: Senior Product Owner at Lloyds Banking Group in London, he is rewarded for his paper on 'Smart Knowledge Assistant'

Matthew Jackson: Independent Contractor in Singapore, he is rewarded for his paper on "A simple AI solutions toolkit for common issues in NGO/Charity banking sector"

Winnie Cheng, a member of the judging panel, said "the awards are a great opportunity to work with innovators and idea testers seeing their vision in moving the needle in fintech."

The 3 winners will be rewarded with entry to the Singapore Fintech Festival, the world's largest Fintech event, in addition to a potential internship and networking session with KPMG Digital Village; Spark Systems Pte Ltd and V-Key. Additionally, there will be a 2-day workshop with Upskills AI experts. They will then present their ideas at an exclusive event organized by CFTE and Ngee Ann Polytechnic and hosted by Prudential. In December, the winners will be flown to Europe where they will gain valuable insight by being introduced to the AI ecosystem in London and Paris.

We would also like to congratulate the runners-up who were all short-listed for inclusion in the top 10:

Fanny Anache: Based in London, "An insurance recommendation engine educating and updating SMEs on their business risks"
Wei Ji Chan: Based in Singapore, "AI for Financial auditing"
Quoc Nguyen: Based in Vietnam, "Google-like search for internal policies, regulatory and legal documents pertaining to bank operations"
Weiyi Nigel: Based in Singapore, "Digitalization and robotics process automation"
Yeong Harng Saim: Based in Singapore, "Next-gen Personal-Finance Buddy"
Sing Wai Tan: Based in Singapore, "Employing machine learning and automation in KYC to improve AML compliance"
David Vinagre Solans: Based in London, "A  corporate banking enhanced monitoring system"

The judging panel appreciated the great quality of all submissions, especially from those shortlisted above. They paid particular attention to the professional yet inventive approach shown by the candidates and their proposals.

We would also like to congratulate any participants not featured in the above, as we truly appreciate all entries received for consideration.

ABOUT AI IN FINANCE
CFTE and Ngee Ann Polytechnic jointly launched AI in Finance for those who want to understand the applications of Artificial Intelligence in finance and how it is transforming the industry. An accredited course designed for finance professionals and entrepreneurs, it is also well-suited for anybody interested in the financial industry. Learners will appreciate the main concepts behind AI and study its ongoing development in financial services.

After a thorough selection process, the proposals were assessed by the judging panel, comprised of:

Janos Barberis: Founder of SuperCharger, the largest Fintech Accelerator in Asia, and a PhD candidate from  the University of Hong Kong.

Philip Watson:  Chief Innovation Officer and Head of the Global Investment Lab of Citi Private Bank

Stephan Murer: Owner of Murer Consulting. He lectures at the Department of Computer Science at Oxford and previously served as the Group Chief Technology Officer at UBS.

Tanya Andreasyan: Editor-in-Chief of Fintech Futures/Banking Technology.  Previously, she was the senior Editor at IBS Publishing Limited.

Winnie Cheng: Chief Data Scientist of Io-Tahoe. She is also an Official member of the Forbes Technology Council. She was previously co-founder of Flowcast and worked at JP Morgan, American Express and IBM Watson.

Liang Yansui: CTO of OneConnect: a subsidiary of PingAn focused on building  platforms based on Big Data, Blockchain, Financial Cloud, AI and other new technologies.

SUMMARY
London-based Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CFTE) and Singapore's Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) announce the winners of the inaugural AI Awards.
