Area Agency on Aging offers free "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" program in Port Charlotte

Registration now open for free six-week program to provide family caregivers with needed skills.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - July 9, 2018 - PRLog -- The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (AAASWFL) is partnering with Port Charlotte United Methodist Church to offer a free six-week program, "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" in Port Charlotte.  The six-week workshop starts July 18 and continues through August 22. The class is designed to help family caregivers better take care of themselves while also caring for a friend or relative.

Class size is limited and advance registration is required.  Workshops will be presented on six consecutive Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 pm. At Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, 21075 Quesada Ave.

Caring for a loved one can be demanding, stressful, and a strain on physical health.  Caregivers often sacrifice their own health and well-being while caring for a partner or family member. As a result, family caregivers experience higher than average rates of depression, chronic illness, sleep deprivation, and poor nutrition.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an evidence-based program that has been shown to improve self-care, reduce emotional strain, and increase confidence among participants.  Workshop attendees also learn about community resources that may provide additional assistance. The July-August workshops are led by two certified Powerful Tools for Caregivers class leaders, Jane Trammell, RN, and Jean-Marie Kolenda, LPN.

For more information or to register for the six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers workshop, call Sherry Young at 866-413-5337 or email sherry.young@aaaswfl.org.
