The Derby Day celebration held at the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation in Palm City was an inaugural event that is sure to become an annual tradition. ERAF is located on a large parcel of land in Palm City on Martin Highway and is currently home to about 40 horses, some of whom are former racehorses. A parade of horses was held prior to post-time and guests had a chance to see the horses show off their braided manes and well-groomed shiny coats. Tours of the barn and hearing the stories of the horses' history is always a part of the joy of visiting the barn and property. Speaking of showing off, there were many exceptional hats on display on both the men and women. A highlight of the fashionable hats were the semi-precious wire fascinators made by artist Shakeera Thomas. Ms. Thomas donated one for the silent auction. Gianni Crescini was the winner of the hat contest with his rose-bedecked straw hat with a horse perched atop it. In addition to music at the outside pavilion and bar, the community center was the center stage for activities as guests made bids on the silent auction items, put in their tickets for the Chinese auction, and enjoyed the champagne bar and hors d'oeuvres. The race coverage had everyone cheering for their favorite steed during the Run for the Roses. The event raised nearly $8,000 to support the free clothing and literacy programs of Caring Children Clothing Children and the horses cared from by the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation.
