"TODAY'S ELECTIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO  BY ANH LE"
The three major candidates for Mayor of San Francisco bring their own strengths to the race. London Breed brings her own brand of leadership, and her experience as president of the Board of Supervisors.

Jane Kim has strong credentials, and touts herself as a progressive candidate. I volunteered for her campaign in the Tenderloin when Kim first ran for Supervisor. It was disappointing, however, when Kim voted against the Soda Tax legislation - Kim claiming, disingenuously, that it was a "regressive tax" against low income people. For someone who received funding from the soda industry, Kim did not address how soda consumption by low income people leads to chronic diseases such as diabetes and rots their teeth.

Mark Leno brings to the race a long record of leadership and legislation at City Hall, the State Assembly, and the State Senate, and his statesmanship style.

All three candidates promise that they have a plan to address the problem and issue of homelessness in San Francisco. Whose plan is the most realistic, and who can probably deliver the best?

On the issue of homelessness, and the myriad of other issues confronting San Francisco, I will cast my vote not based on any candidate's ethnic or racial background, her or his gender, their stated gender or sexual orientation, nor their endorsement by party or interest groups. I will cast my vote for only one candidate for mayor. I think the results in the mayor's race will probably be close.

In terms of the Governor's race, I think Gavin Newsom will be riding on the coat tail of his background of gilded privilege, powerful interests, and billionaires' money and endorsements.

I think that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's candidacy has still not fully caught up yet to the emerging demographics of the strong political voice and power of Latino and Hispanic people in the state of California.

Governor Jerry Brown has been an exceptional governor. His legacy will be unique and hard to match.
