The Albert Schweitzer Animal Welfare Fund grant has provided funds for both a tractor and the construction of a composting station. With 40 horses on site at ERAF, handling literally tons of manure is an ongoing challenge. "We use environmentally sound practices as much as possible," stated Denise LeClair Robbins, board president. This requires extensive composting and recycling of the manure rather than having it all continuously hauled for disposal. When the construction project is completed, manure will be delivered by tractor to the composting station and when composted, will be used as a natural fertilizer for pastures. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries accredited the Equine Rescue and Adoption Center, a nonprofit organization, in 2017. GFAS accreditation is a requirement to receive funding from the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Animal Welfare Fund. Accreditation signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects meets their stringent standards as well as being tax exempt with 92 cents of every dollar received going directly to equine care. Volunteers are an essential component in the ongoing care and operation of the organization.
