New Teen Programs at the Montclair Art Museum In March

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - March 16, 2018 - PRLog -- The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) has spotlighted and expanded its teen programs this year. In March, two programs will engage teens in new ways: a special Teen Space Open Studio will explore artmaking for protest and change and the Teen Artist Talk & Workshop will offer the opportunity to make art directly with artist Dan Fenelon.

This fall, MAM initiated Teen Space, a drop-in open studio for teens on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Teens are invited to work on individual projects (from school, MAM, or independent work) in a professional studio space among peers. On March 22, this program will have a special focus on March for Our Lives. Inspired by the students around the country who are speaking out and changing the world, this open studio will focus on making posters, T-shirts, buttons, and protest art just in time for the March for Our Lives on March 24.

The Museum previously held an Annual High School Lecture, inviting prominent artists to share their insight with teens contemplating creative careers. This year, the lecture has been revamped into a dynamic Teen Artist Talk & Workshop on March 29. Teens will have the opportunity to get creative in an interactive workshop with MAM Art Truck Resident Artist Dan Fenelon and discover opportunities for working in the arts. Fenelon's signature "urban tribal" style is instantly recognizable on murals at the Montclair Library, Luna Stage in West Orange, and other public spaces throughout the country. MAM has also served as the sole NJ affiliate partner of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for ten years. The Awards are the country's longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7–12. Through MAM, hundreds of creative teens annually have received regional honors and proceeded to the national competition for further adjudication and scholarship opportunities. The Museum is now displaying an exhibition of works by the 2018 Regional Gold Key Winners in the Vance Wall Art Education Center through March 26, 2018.

Additional teen programs include:

·       Bridges, a free intergenerational art program that brings together people with Alzheimer's and dementia and middle school students

·       Teen Internships, a year-long paid opportunity in art education

·       Pictures Concert, which explores the intersection of music and visual art through student compositions (June 7, during Free First Thursday Night, 7 p.m.)

·       Portfolio Day, which invites college admission officers to review student portfolios each fall

Teen art classes are also offered every semester in the Yard School of Art at the Montclair Art Museum, including a new Teen Workshops series launching this spring. Registration is now open for spring and summer art classes.

Meet the artist! Bring your friends to the MAM to hear from a professional artist, ask your burning questions about working in the arts, and get creative in an interactive workshop! This year, MAM is launching a new Teen Artist Talk & Workshop series. Dan Fenelon, whose signature "urban tribal" style is instantly recognizable on murals at the Montclair Library, Luna Stage in West Orange, and other public spaces throughout the country, trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Dan works in a range of media—acrylic on canvas, 3D printed figurines, and larger-than-life sculptures. He teaches students of all ages at schools across the country, including locally with MAM's Art Truck and mobile studio. Dan will lead an interactive mask-making workshop following the artist talk. All art supplies—and snacks—will be provided.
