The beat of bhangra dhol turns non-dancer into dancer!

ILFORD, U.K. - Feb. 19, 2018 - PRLog -- The dhol is a type of drum that shows its face in around 15th century. It was probably found in the Indian subcontinent through the Persian drum type dohol. It is evidenced from the Ain-i-Akbari, which depicts the use of this instrument in the orchestra of the great Mughal emperor Akbar the Great. Images of dhol players are found in the carvings on many Indian temple walls from the ancient times. There may be a great possibility that both the instrument and the name have some deep Indo-European connection.

How to play the Dhol

The dhol has been played using one or two wooden sticks and these are usually made out of bamboo and cane wood. The first stick is bent and the other stick is thinner and flexible than the first one and it is used for playing the higher note end of the instrument. The dhol is hanging over the neck of the player with cotton- made strap. The surface of the wooden barrel is sometimes decorated with various patterns and sometimes painted with designs.

Construction of Dhol

A dhol is a double-sided barrel shaped drum which is played mostly as an accompanying instrument in any regional music forms. The sizes of the drum may vary from region to region. If you go to Punjab, you will find the dhols are of large and bulky in size to produce the loudest sound. In many other regions, dhols are found in different shapes and sizes and it is made with different materials like woods, fiberglass, steel and plastic. The drum is made of a wooden barrel with animal hide or various synthetic skins which has stretched over its open ends by covering them completely. These covers of skins can be adjusted with one tightening mechanism which made up either of any interwoven ropes, or of nuts and bolts. Tightening or loosening of the skins actually changes the mode of the drum sound. The stretched skin is found thicker in another end and it produces a deep and low frequency but higher bass sound and the other thinner end produces a higher frequency sound.

Regional forms and traditions

In Punjab this dhol is called bhangra dhol and used mainly in Lohri and any weddings. In Assam, dhol is used in Bihu which is the main instrument for Bihu dance. In Goa this instrument along with tasha used in temple as well as in Sigmo celebration. In the celebration of Garba on Navaratri dhol is very popular in Gujarat. In Maharashtra dhol is the primary musical instrument of Ganesh puja. In Karnataka dhol is called dhollu and used in one type of folk dance. Dhol is considered to be a very popular Indian musical instrument used in formal and informal dance performances since time immemorial.
