LOS ANGELES - Nov. 24, 2017 - PRLog -- What started as a casual conversation while passing through Los Angeles' Skid Row is now a weekly even whenever Darnell Lamont Walker is in town. In his own words: "I was passing through on my way to purchase some socks from The Alley, and I stopped at a light. A guy asked where I was going, so I told him, and he asked if I could buy him a pair of socks as well because he desperately needed them. He wasn't joking. I bought him two pair, watched him give the other to a friend. I knew I needed to do more."

That was 2009. When in the city, Mr. Walker has gone every week since to take whatever it is he's been able to round up that seemed beneficial to those living in that almost forgotten section of the city. Darnell calls on his friends to look through their drawers, closets, cabinets, and refrigerators and bag anything they're willing to donate, then he makes them volunteer their time to help give the things to those who need them.

"We're not an organization," Mr. Walker says. "We're just people doing what people do." He's excited that word is catching on, and now friends call him before he calls them to say, "come get these clothes." After speaking in Atlanta to screen and promote Outside The House, his film on Black Mental Health at an event hosted by Impulse Group, Darnell met Dorian Hannah and Jose Ramos, building a relationship that would not only benefit each of them, but he worlds around them. Just a few days before Thanksgiving, Impulse Group promised a donation to help continue Darnell's work on Skid Row.

Working with multiple community resource agencies in Los Angeles and nationwide, Darnell Lamont Walker has also been able to raise money to provide mental health assistance to those who are unable to afford the services, resulting in at least 6 homeless individuals he's met in Los Angeles reconnecting with their families, returning home to begin their new and healthier lives.

"My goal this autumn, while visiting Los Angeles and all other places I travel, is to feed and provide love and support for as many people as possible," Mr. Walker says. When asked about why his work has been so quiet and why he's now making noise, he answers, "It was just a thing that was happening. Nothing I honestly thought people would care about these days. But after taking more and more friends, I'm told it's something that should be shared, so I'm sharing. And the results have been great."

Darnell now lives in Johnannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa where continues his art and doing the heart work.
