LOS ANGELES - Dec. 9, 2018 - PRLog -- Set Yourself on Fire Set Yourself On Fire is a documentary exploring what it means to invite survivors to be heard and to be believed. Rape is a violent act that's hidden itself in the tiny fabrics of our many cultures, begging us to normalize it. It too often goes unpunished because it's main job has been to keep patriarchy intact, exposing those who, to that patriarchy, do not matter. This documentary is giving voice back to those who've been told they do not matter. And we believe them.

Darnell Lamont Walker traveled the world, visiting South Africa, the United Kingdom, and his home country, USA, talking with survivors, their family, their friends, and experts on the subject, collecting footage to eventually make this film. Walker recruited Tonja Renée Stidhum to help produce, knowing she would be able to contribute greatly with her talents and skills, and they created this conversation about rape and sexual assault.

For many of those voices featured in this documentary, it is their first time speaking of their assault. For others, it became a way to help others make it through those dark times that inevitably come. "Our hope is that this film at least begins a conversation or twenty," Walker says. "On college campuses, in community centers, churches, police stations, clinics, classrooms, office spaces, street corners, and everywhere else," Stidhum adds.

The title, Set Yourself on Fire, comes from Warsan Shire's well-known poem, "In Love and War." She says, " To my daughter I will say, 'when the men come, set yourself on fire'."

"From the earliest moments of the film, Walker's Set Yourself on Fire offers us a visceral confrontation to the violent harm experienced by survivors of rape, especially women and children. To whatever may be said of its lack in production veneer, the film responds with powerful and unfiltered first-person testimonies that simply cannot be unheard from people who cannot be unseen. Such a subtlety quite creatively captures just how everyday and commonplace sexual violence and rape culture are in global society." – Charles H.F. Davis.
