·         VMware Certified Associate (VCA)

·         VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

·         VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)

Today, the most trending certifications are VMware Certified Advanced Professional for Data Center Administrator and VMware Certified Advanced Professional for Data Center Design. You need to begin either at the Associate or Professional level, moving upwards to pursue Advanced and Expert Levels.

The latest VMware release is Version 6. This version comprises of four categories:

• Cloud Management and Automation
• Data Center Virtualization
• Desktop and Mobility
• Network Virtualization

·         And each of these categories offer various certification levels,

• VMware Certified Associate (VCA)
• VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
• VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
• VMware Certified Implementation Expert (VCIX)
• VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX)

Earlier, the VMware Certified Professional was the only exam offered as a certification. Today, it is just considered as a part of the larger picture. VCP VMware certification proves that you have the basic skills and knowledge to work with vSphere. To become a VCP, you must first take an approved, instructor-led training class of any one of the following,

·         VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage

·         VMware vSphere: Fast Track

·         VMware vSphere: Troubleshooting

Since it serves as the foundation to other VMware certifications, the VCP is a mandatory certification. You need to remember that any VMware certification requires a great deal of dedication. It keeps getting harder at each level and the higher you go, the better it looks on your resume.

Requirements

VMware Certified Associate is the basic foundation certification. To be eligible for the certification, one must;

1: Gain experience with vSphere 6 (minimum 6 months recommended)
2: Attend one of the required training courses
3: Complete the vSphere 6 Foundations Exam

Associate certifications normally entail passing a single exam to attain the certification. Whereas if you aim at the Professional and Advanced Professional certifications, you must either earn a prerequisite certification and pass an exam or take a training course. A few certifications also require you to take two exams.

Exam

The VMware exam consists of multiple choice questions. There are a total of 85 test questions and a short pre-exam survey is conducted consisting of only 8 questions. You need to score 300 or above to pass the examination. In case you fail in the first attempt, you must wait 10 business days before you decide to retake the exam.

The exam duration lasts for 90 minutes and an additional 15 minutes is provided to complete the survey questions. Another extra 30 minutes will given to those who take the exam in a country where English is not a primary language. The exam costs around $225.00 and may vary from place to place due to exchange rates and local taxes.

The only challenge is there are several VMware certifications, and choosing the one that suits you the best is a task. Well, it all depends on your career goals. This certification is recognition of your technical skills and knowledge. It serves as a platform for greater career opportunities and faster advancements in roles. Many companies today won't even consider candidates without a VMware certification.

The average starting salaries for VMware certified individual ranges between $85,000 and $120,000 based on your experience and certifications. The VMware Certified Professional salary ranges between $87,000 and $95,000, VMware Certified Advanced Professional salary ranges between $92,000 and $103,000 and the VMware Certified Design Expert salary ranges between $99,000 and $120,000.
