MUMBAI, India - Oct. 12, 2017 - PRLog -- World Mental Health Day is observed globally, on the 10th of October each year. The WHO set this year's theme as 'Mental Health in the Workplace'. In order to celebrate this event, Therappo.com, in association with the Dept. of Psychology of Maniben Nanavati Women's College and Axis Bank, conducted an awareness event amongst Axis Bank employees.  This whole event was held at Axis Bank HO located at Wadia International Center, Worli, Mumbai, on 10th October, 2017. Axis Bank graciously hosted the whole event for all attendees.

A panel discussion was organised, on the 'Relevance of Mental Health Management at the Modern Work Place'. The panel included prominent personalities associated with the industry, such as Dr. Avinash DeSousa (Consultant Psychiatrist & Founder DeSousa Foundation), Mr. Suresh Mehra (VP, HR Dept., Axis Bank), Dr. Cicilia Chettiar (Head of Dept of Psychology, MNW College), Ms. Ishita Sharma (Actress, M.A. Psychology), and Therappo.com's very own co-founder- Mr. Sanjay Sarkar.

The FlashMob

This was performed by the undergraduate psychology students from Maniben Nanavati Women's College. They prepared an enjoyable and meaningful performance, with carefully chosen songs. About 30 girls were a part of this dance and truly spread the message of awareness and acceptance by including a classmate who had cerebral palsy.

Their performance was received with much excitement, chatter and applause from everyone present.

The Panel Discussion

The discussion was kicked off with moderator, Rachana Awatramani's introduction. She began with a short case-story from Therappo about Mr.Gupta (name changed). He too, like many others was battling a number of challenges in life, daily. He was advised by someone to seek professional help for his mental health. His first thoughts were however, "am I mad? Why should I go to a psychiatrist or psychologist? What will people think about me?" He too wondered a question that often crosses people's minds - what if someone sees me, or judges me? So after googling the prevalence of similar issues, he discovered research suggesting that nearly 42.5% of individual suffer from a mental health issue. Even after reading these numbers, he felt hesitant to physically visit a clinic.

Mr. Sanjay Sarkar, as a co-founder of the online counselling platform – Therappo spoke about the current age of digitalisation and its role in encouraging individuals to seek out professional help. He commented on the importance and benefits of a digital solution which addresses the existing hesitation to go see a counsellor. His explanation was an anecdote on how, in any physician's waiting room, all the chairs are always occupied.

Dr. Avinash added that the advantage of an online platform, in a digital age, is that this matter of convenience is resolved for both the professional and the individual with a platform like Therappo. Time and effort are saved. Any employee may be able to avail of the service even during a lunch break, or once they reach home! He presented a second advantage as well. Online services such as Therappo, increase access to mental health care.

Dr. Cicilia added that, to address this need and to take action, it is important to have a systematic investment plan. Companies should work towards implementing some form of mental healthcare a little bit, everyday- instead of only when the need arises. "Don't wait for rock bottom. There are two ways to go about it. You can go from negative to baseline, or go from baseline to higher.

To conclude the discussion, the panelists were then all asked to share one insight on how to cope with stigma and understand mental health.

Mr. Mehra said, "Life is about enjoying it. Yes work is important too. It is also important to maintain a daily balance. From day one!"

Mr. Sarkar added that, "While you do everything for yourself, you must also realise that everyone around may not have the same privileges, so be kind to people around you. There may be people suffering very quietly. All you can do is be compassionate. Don't laugh it off…connect and this can create the right compassion that is needed to help someone who is affected."

Dr. Avinash's parting point about acceptance was that, "the most important person in your life is you. You have to protect that. There's always going to be lighting, thunder and storms; visit us and we'll teach you to dance in the rain."

Ms. Ishita ended by speaking about the current scenario. "I want to follow my passions is the new hot thing, but there is hard work involved in it all. You can choose to be whatever you wish, but you will have to everything, to serve the bigger picture. Don't evaluate your life based on other people. Also get educated! The more you know about things the more you can talk about it. Education is empowerment in the truest sense. Be compassionate and sensitive. Listen, don't just hear. And finally, a work life balance must be learned."

The event ended with a hearty offering of evening snacks and tea generously provided by Axis Bank.
