Problem Faced by international student in Syracuse University

Syracuse: Since her very childhood, Shuohan Zhang was a very ambitious kid and wanted to pursue her higher education in some American universities. This dream was instilled in her by her parents, who were completely convinced by the US educational system. She went to an international school in China, so that she can prepare well for the ACT and the TOEFL, a test that measures English language competence for non-native speakers.

However, the reality has unfolded quite differently than she envisaged, only three months into her freshman year at a leading American university. In this short span of time, she has realized that there are not adequate resources with which she can raise the bar of her English competence to be able to continue her studies at the university. She found the amount of English teaching offered to international students as English being their second language, is not at all enough. Even, this deficiency has made her to drop one courses in her very first semester itself. As per her, she could not keep up to the expectation of completing long assignments required in that course.

"For me, the most daunting part is to write those long assignments," she said. "And it becomes that more difficult as in my high school, I have never written so much, not even the half of what I am expected of here. In the very first assignment, I was asked to submit an essay of 1,500 words and I don't have any experience of writing so much, I don't know how to approach, plan, and complete essays of this length."

Zhang is not a one off, rather there are increasing number of similar examples where international students have come to some US university for quality education after overcoming a lot of challenges, only to feel helpless with the lack of adequate resources.  As per the estimate of the Institute of International Education, the count of international students in the U.S. has increased 7.1 percent in comparison to last year, crossing the 1 million mark for the first time.

At Zhang's university, the increase of international students in the last decade or so is really unprecedented, a whopping 143 percent since 2006.
