EPA's SNAP Program: Identifies Climate-Friendly Refrigerants, Prohibits Harmful Ones.

WHIPPANY, N.J. - July 29, 2016 - PRLog -- The use of HFCs is growing rapidly as the Montreal Protocol ban on CFCs and HCFCs winds down toward 2020, when production and consumption of these ozone-depleting refrigerants, including the popular R-22, will be reduced by 99.5%. Unfortunately, though HFCs do not deplete the ozone, they are highly potent greenhouse gases that contribute to global warning.

In response, the EPA created the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program to evaluate HCFC substitutes for risks to human health and the environment, identify acceptable and unacceptable alternatives, and prohibit the use of the most harmful substitutes.  Substitutes are classified by the EPA based on the overall risks as compared with available substitutes, so when an acceptable status can change to unacceptable as safer alternatives become available.

To date, SNAP has reviewed more than 400 refrigerants and lists acceptable and unacceptable substitutes by industrial sectors that include refrigeration and air conditioning, foam blowing agents, cleaning solvents, fire suppression and explosion protection, aerosols, sterilants, tobacco expansion, and adhesives, coatings and inks. Substitutes in the HVAC-R sector are categorized into end uses such as chillers, industrial process air conditioning, industrial process refrigeration, motor vehicle air conditioning, cold storage warehouses, household refrigeration and air conditioning, and more. These categories are further broken down by equipment.  For example, SNAP classifies 56 acceptable substitutes for centrifugal chillers and 45 acceptable substitutes for use in industrial process air conditioning.
