Kent State College of Business Administration Students and Faculty Receive Accounting Awards

KENT, Ohio - June 28, 2016 - PRLog -- The Ohio Region of the American Accounting Association announced awards at its 57th Annual Meeting and second Doctoral and New Faculty Consortium in Beachwood, Ohio, on April 7-9.

Wendy Tietz, Ph.D., accounting professor at the College of Business Administration, won the 2016 Teaching, Learning and Curriculum (TLC) Section Ohio Region Best Paper Award, along with Amirali Moeini, a Kent State University MSA student. Their paper was titled Caesars Palace: A Serial Introductory Financial Accounting Case.

Tietz has been with Kent State University since 2000. She is a certified public accountant, a certified management accountant, a chartered global management accountant and a member of the American Accounting Association. She received her doctorate from Kent State University and her MBA and bachelor's degree from the University of Akron. She has worked in the accounting industry, both as a controller for a financial institution and as the operations manager and controller for a recycled plastics manufacturer.

Tietz lead a discussion at the meeting titled "Leading Effective Online Discussions in Introductory Accounting Courses," which showed participants learning how to get the most out of using online discussions to promote interaction and engagement with introductory accounting students. The session also covered the challenges and rewards of utilizing discussions effectively in the online accounting classroom.

"The Department of Accounting at Kent State University continues to offer a foundation that shapes lifelong knowledge and career advancement," said Deborah Spake, dean of the College of Business Administration. "I am proud of the faculty and students who represented the College at the American Accounting Association meeting."

Justyna Skomra, Ph.D. student in accounting at Kent State University, won Best Doctoral Student Manuscript Award for her paper titled The Consequences of Non-Timely Audit Reports on the Audit Reporting Lag during Busy Season: Exploring Office Level Domino Effects.

Additional winners from the College of Business Administration include Fangjun Sang, accounting Ph.D. student, and Indrarini Laksmana, Ph.D., accounting associate professor, who presented their paper titled Say on Pay Votes, Competition Type, and the Use of Relative Performance Evaluation in CEO Compensation. Laksmana also presented a paper titled The Effect Compensation on Report Lag: An Empirical Evidence with Ph.D. accounting student, Trung Pham.

Heidi Meier, Kent State alumna of the accounting Ph.D. program, was awarded the OSCPA 2016 Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator Award and Kristine Parsons, Kent State alumna of the accounting Ph.D. program, was awarded the OSCPA 2016 Outstanding Service Award.

The American Accounting Association is the largest community of accountants in academia. Founded in 1916, it has a rich and reputable history built on leading-edge research and publications.
