Follow on Google News | Charlottesville, VA residents use unparalleled power of concerned citizens to send kids swimmingFor the second year, Charlottesville kids will enjoy fun in the sun at an area pool
By: Darnell Lamont Walker This is the second year Walker has raised money, enlisting the help of Brandy Garrison to help area parents fill out Park and Recreation scholarship forms and purchase and buy summer passes. In Summer 2015, Walker and Garrison were able to raise enough money to help 100 kids get to the pool. This year, their goal is 200, and they are well underway, already sending many children to the pool to begin their summer breaks. Walker and Garrison urge area parents to contact them via telephone, email, or in the Facebook group they created, Charlottesville Swims. "It makes absolutely no sense to charge a child $6 per day to swim or $29 for a summer pass knowing many area families aren't able to afford that. Unless that's the City's goal," Walker says, arguing that the city is trying hard to push many families out of the city, and out of the visible areas. Darnell Lamont Walker, a Charlottesville native, now lives in Los Angeles, CA, but continues to work hard for the community and the people who helped him reach the levels he's reached, and those who are pushing him higher.
