BANGALORE, India - May 14, 2016 - PRLog -- Health care workers involved in handling and administering cytotoxic medication must be familiar and adhere to policies and guidelines relating to cytotoxic drugs.
Cytotoxic drugs have been used, prescribed and administered for a variety of conditions. Health care personnel have the potential for exposure during drug reconstitution, preparation, administration, the disposal of waste medicine and equipment and the disposal of patient bodily fluids and waste.
Cytotoxic Direct exposure  can occur during administration or handling, and can be the result of inhalation, ingestion or absorption. The health risk of any procedure involving cytotoxic and/or cytostatic drugs stems from the inherent toxicity of the drug and the extent to which health care workers and patients are exposed.
All staff involved in the handling of cytotoxic drugs should attend a training session on the handling of cytotoxic drugs and on the management of cytotoxic spillages as part of their orientation and yearly update.
Acute exposure generally causes transient symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, rash, skin and mucous membrane irritation, and eye or throat irritation. However, repeated exposure to chemotherapeutic agents is especially dangerous. Chemotherapy drugs are carcinogenic, mutagenic (induces or increases genetic mutations), and/or teratogenic (causes malformations in developing embryos). They can cause organ toxicity, including damage to a woman's reproductive system.
