SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Jan. 29, 2016 - PRLog -- Enrolled Agents, “America’s Tax Experts” also known as “EAs,” are federally-licensed tax professionals who have passed a stringent three-part exam administered by US Department of Treasury, must earn annual continuing education credits and abide by a code of ethics in order to maintain their credential. An Enrolled Agent protects the rights of the taxpayer.

“The goal of this proclamation is to educate the public about the qualifications of EAs for tax preparation and representation,” said ISEA President Janet Sienicki, EA as she received the document from representative Bill Fine. “A lot of people only think of CPAs when they think of tax professionals. In truth, many CPAs work in areas other than tax.” Only enrolled agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in all areas of taxation, representation and ethics before they are given unlimited representation rights before the IRS. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who are state licensed and who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all enrolled agents specialize in taxation.

Enrolled agents advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and any entities with tax-reporting requirements. Enrolled agents’ expertise in the continually changing field of taxation enables them to effectively represent taxpayers at all administrative levels within the IRS. Enrolled Agents have earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS in cases of audits, collections or appeals; they assist clients with liens, levies and establishing payment plans.

History of Enrolled Agents
After the Civil War, many citizens had problems settling claims with the government. Congress, in 1884, endowed Enrolled Agents.  In 1913, when the income tax bill was passed, the job of the Enrolled Agent increased to include tax preparation.  Additionally, as audits became more prevalent, their role evolved to include taxpayer representation and negotiating with the Internal Revenue Service on behalf of their client.
