Follow on Google News | Beaverton School Honors Veterans Day By Keeping Students in ClassPilgrim Lutheran is open on traditional ‘No School’ day; invites veterans to speak, free lunch.
By: Pilgrim Lutheran Christian School Pilgrim Lutheran School’s faculty, staff, parents, students and the church’s Director of Christian Education, Andrea Gehrke, are all working together to plan this special day with the goals of honoring our veterans while students learn about veterans in the community. To prepare, Pilgrim’s students are practicing special songs to sing, making thank you cards, and creating “Wall of Honor” decorations. At lunch, students will sit alongside veterans to learn about their military experience. In morning classes, some grades will discuss contributions of our country’s war vets and learn history of U.S. wars. Others will have in depth discussions with veterans as guest speakers. The assembly will feature student songs and remarks to thank veterans for their service. The school’s lunch coordinator, Sarah Olson, with the help of volunteer parents and alumni, is preparing four times the normal lunches for invited veterans and students. The school gym will be transformed into a ‘mess hall’ and middle school students involved in student leadership will serve lunch. “What better way is there to learn history, than from the experiences and stories of those who have lived it? So Pilgrim is inviting veterans from the school and church community and from the whole Beaverton area so our students can learn from them while they thank them for their service.” says Chris Herold, Principal at Pilgrim Lutheran Christian School. Veterans planning to attend include those who served on the beaches of Normandy, in the jungles of Vietnam, and in the Middle East. This is the third year the school has chosen to stay open during this holiday. ### Pilgrim Lutheran Christian School is accredited by both AdvancED and National Lutheran Schools Accreditation (NLSA).
