Data Visualization Recognizes State of Canada's Geospatial Industry

CloverPoint, a leader in land management consulting, GIS, mapping, and land management software publishes Infographic recognizing The State Canada's geomatics industry.

May 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) recently released details of an assessment of the state of geomatics in Canada. The report billed as “the Canadian geomatics environmental scan”, looks at some of the key players in the industry and provides a brief analysis of the benefits of geomatics technologies and services – something near and dear to our business here at CloverPoint.

According to NRCAN, the research represents the most comprehensive assessment of geomatics and geospatial information in Canada. The report uses the term “collaboration” a number of times, perhaps indicative of the direction the industry has taken, particularly over the last decade. Of particular interest, our own CEO, Jeff Warwick  (@WarwickVic on Twitter) gravitated to this statement when asked what jumped out at him… “With the need to govern so much geography and resource potential juxtaposed against a relatively small population, Canada has been at the leading edge of innovation and use of geospatial technologies.”

We're pleased to share a “TOP 10″ style list of top findings of the Canadian Geomatics Environmental Scan Report. Some of the Top resources recognized in the infographic include:

- There are 2450 firms that make up the Canadian geomatics industry, most are relatively small, with 75% having fewer than 50 employees.

- The industry contributed $2.3 billion to the GDP in 2013

- The rate which companies entered this market segment peaked in the 1980s and has been in steady decline since.

- 94 colleges and universities offer programs in some aspect of geomatics

Overall, the report concludes that geomatics remains in its early phase and that plenty of opportunity for business exists. Of particular interest, Open geospatial data is a driving force and is making a difference! When the public sector focuses on traditional geomatics (data, mapping, analysis), continues supporting the solid foundations of geomatics (standards), ensures data is made available (open data initiatives), and promotes private/academia sectors to innovate with this strong foundation, the so-called geomatics industry will flourish.
