This 12-week culinary course is for those who want to learn about all facets of cooking to become good well rounded cooks at home. This series includes lectures; written materials; demonstrations of culinary terms; techniques & tools; ingredient selection; menu planning & presentation techniques. Hands-on lessons will be in: Kitchen Basics, Terminology & Knife Skills; Sauces; Soups; Sautéing & Braising; Eggs; Grilling & Roasting; Fish & Shellfish; Potatoes, Pasta & Rice; Quick Breads & Yeast Breads; Hors d’oeuvres & First Courses; Baking & Desserts, & Graduation Dinner. The instructor for Essence of Cooking is Chef Linda Martin. A graduate of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, Martin has earned degrees in both Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. Linda began her culinary career at Anthem Country Club and in 2003 opened Dinner Designs, a small event consulting and catering service. Chef Martin also works as a consultant and contract chef with Dacor, a manufacturer of luxury kitchen appliances. Chef Martin teaches 2-3 classes every week at Sweet Basil and makes regular guest chef appearances on NBC Phoenix Channel 12's Arizona Midday. The store’s focus is on all the tools and merchandise needed for cooking, entertaining and gift giving from aprons to zesters. The Cooking School averages 10 hands-on cooking classes a week such as the popular Gourmet Couples class on Friday evenings and a demonstration Lunch & Learn class from Noon-1PM every Friday afternoon. Sweet Basil also is available for private parties and team-building events. Owner Martie Sullivan recently opened the 42-seat Sweet Basil Market Cafe within the store and an outdoor patio.
