Bosco Tech Hosts Math Competition for Middle School Students, Workshop for Teachers on Feb. 7

SAN GABRIEL, Calif. - Jan. 12, 2015 - PRLog -- Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) will host a mathematics competition for fifth through eighth grade students on Saturday, February 7. The 43nd annual event will offer awards for the highest scoring individual and teams. Students from all San Gabriel Valley public and private schools are invited to participate.

During the competition, a workshop will be provided for middle school teachers, examining problems used on the test, to facilitate classroom discussion of the math concepts involved. The workshop will be led by instructional expert and mathematics textbook author Michael Hattar, a longtime Bosco Tech math teacher and professor at Rio Hondo Community College and Mount San Antonio College. This year, for the first time, the $1,000 Michael M. Hattar Excellence in Math Scholarship will be offered to the top scoring participant who attends Bosco Tech in the fall of 2015.

“The math competition is an opportunity for middle school students to test their critical thinking and computational skills,” said Bosco Tech Principal Xavier Jimenez. “We believe it encourages the development of complex math skills among younger students, something that’s very important for students interested in engineering, math, science or medicine.”

Competition check in begins at 7:45 a.m. and the one-hour test starts at 9 a.m. Free fun activities will be offered, and food will be available for purchase. An award ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m., following the competition. The cost is $8 per individual and $5 per person for teams of four or more.
