Do you know what is "Semana Santa"?

May 21, 2014 - PRLog -- The celebration of Semana Santa in Spain is a glorious time of tradition, festivities, feasts, and fun. Spanish for “Holy Week,” Semana Santa celebrates the week leading up to Easter with a variety of events throughout Spain. Spain resorts are extremely full during this time of year, as many tourists and Spanish people travel to enjoy the once a year celebration.

Every Spanish city, village, and town has different traditions and practices during Semana Santa, but there are a few universal activities that occur throughout the country. During the day, parades celebrate the life of Jesus with floats and ornaments and are processed throughout town from the main cathedral. Typically, the parades are festive, with music and colorful decorations, and are a highlight of the day. Each day leading up to Easter, the events intensify, and the final two days before the holiday are the most excited and celebrated.

Some areas of Spain, like Seville, celebrate the parades with saeta. Traditionally, saeta was a spontaneous outburst of song, sung in the flamenco style. Singers serenade the parade floats from balconies, and the parade halts until the song is finished. Today, saeta is planned to go along with the route, and songs are selected for each day. Visitors look up to gorgeously decorated balconies while well known singers enchant parade goers with song.

Traditional food also plays a role in the Holy week. Delicious delicacies and flavors are found throughout cities from street vendors, and Spain resorts also participate in serving guests traditional fare. During Semana Santa Catholics are denied the opportunity to eat meat. Menus will typically include fresh fish and local vegetables. Succulent meals like Garbanzos con Bacalao (cod served with chickpeas) Arroz con Leche (typical rice pudding), Torrijas (bread soaked in egg and milk fried with sugar and cinnamon), Pestiña (dough fried with honey), and other specialty items are found during this time.

Mingle in the crowded streets during the day, check out the various parade routes, and relax by the pool in the evening. Spain resorts are the perfect place stay when enjoying the magic and festivities of Semana Santa. More information about Spain resorts: http://www.bahia-principe.com/en/hotels-resort/spain
