For these sellers, avoiding attention and in-person scrutiny is the precise reason they opened an online store. It's a benefit no store owner has. These hidden owners don't understand why offering quality products is not enough to in today's marketplace. They think buyers are strange for wanting to know them better. "I always tell my clients to imagine switching places with their customers," says Mike Devaney, a Seattle-based marketing consultant. "Flesh-and-blood people humanize a company and build trust.
