The Making Of Grand Hyatt Bali

The Hyatt Corporation began operation in 1957 when it acquired its first hotel at Los Angeles International Airport. Over the following decade, a number of new hotels across the United States were swiftly annexed into Hyatt Corporation.

NUSA DUA, Indonesia - May 6, 2014 - PRLog -- In 1967, Hyatt opened a hotel remarkably different from any hotel the world had ever seen: Hyatt Regency Atlanta. With dazzling features such as a breathtaking 21-story atrium lobby replete with lush trees, hanging greenery, spectacular sculptures, glittering glass elevators, a revolving rooftop restaurant and a dazzling array of services and amenities, Hyatt Regency Atlanta launched a new era in hotel architecture and operating philosophy.

By 1969, the chain had expanded to 13 properties in the United States. As opportunities for development began to appear in other nations, Hyatt International was formed to carry the Hyatt concept of excellence overseas. Hyatt Regency Hong Kong was the first hotel to open under Hyatt International management.

Hyatt first established itself in the archipelago (Indonesia) when Bali Hyatt opened its doors 30 years ago on Sanur beach.

Bali Hyatt has long been recognized worldwide as the island’s leading hotel, famous for its hospitality, the quality of its service and its stunning botanical gardens. Beside Hyatt Resorts Bali, other Hyatt hotels in Indonesia are the Aryaduta hotel in Jakarta, Hyatt Regency Surabaya, Grand Hyatt Jakarta, Hyatt Regency Bandung, and Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta.

The brand name “Grand Hyatt” is used exclusively for large-scale properties located only in the major capitals and recreations centers of the world. They feature modern technology combined with old-world hospitality and are designed to anticipate all the needs of the sophisticated, experienced traveler.

Grand Hyatt Bali was designed by a firm internationally renowned as a specialist in resort design, Wimberly, Allison, Tong and Goo of Honolulu, Hawaii and Shimizu Corporation, Tokyo. The concept chosen for Grand Hyatt Bali is that of a Balinese water-palace reminiscent of the legendary palace of Tirta Gangga in Karangasem.

One of the resort’s exciting features in the dazzling view that greet guests as they enter the lobby: a breathtaking view of the ocean, with waves braking on the reefs and the peninsula, lily ponds cascading into small rivers and lagoons, a fabulous river pool replete with a 50-metre waterslide, and a beautiful freeform pool next to a long stretch of pristine beach.

Construction of the hotel started at the end of 1989, and the resort opened 20 months later, on April 5, 1991. As many as seven thousand workers were on site at one time, working day and night, using quality materials found in Indonesia. As the hotel approached the finishing stage, skilled Balinese artisans came on site to create the artworks and sculptures that decorate the resort.

The landscape architecture was designed by Tongg, Clarke & McCelvey of Honolulu, and executed by Indo Sekar, Bali. At the start of the rainy season, gardeners began to plant the acres of grass, thousands of trees, shrubs, bushes, flowering plants and water lilies to transform the site into an exotic garden.

The interior of the resort was designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates of Hong Kong. The themes chosen for the interior were inspired by Indonesian art, furniture and design. Indonesian materials and craftsmanship were used in the production of all the hotel’s furniture and decorations.

Grand Hyatt Bali is proud of its art collection, which comprises of beautiful paintings by Indonesian artists, antique furniture from all over the archipelago, jewellery, ornaments, wooden sculptures, pottery, masks and intricately woven textiles such as priceless songkets and ikats. This fabulous collection is on permanent display throughout the hotel and not only highlights the resort’s architecture, but is a delight to our guests who have a chance to discover a little bit of Indonesia while staying with us.
