Emergence of 3D NAND a Boon to the Struggling Global NAND Flash Memory Market
The Global NAND Market has met with some serious challenges, but innovations like 3D NAND will keep the market afloat for the projected period.
In the recently published report on the Global NAND Flash Memory Market, TechNavio analysts cite emergence of portable display devices such as smartphones and tablets and the related decline in desktop PCs as a major hurdle for NAND flash memory.
Additionally, Apple, the largest consumer of NAND, launched their free iCloud service in 2011, dealing a blow to the global NAND market.
According to Faisal Ghaus, Vice President of TechNavio Research, “the introduction of Apple's free iCloud service is likely to reduce the demand for NAND flash memory, decreasing storage needs by approximately 80GB per user. The unit shipment of NAND flash memory for various Apple products was recorded at 5 billion GB in 2011.”
While these challenges are significant, they are not insurmountable, and the Global NAND market is evolving in response. 3D NAND, which has a much higher storage capacity than the 2D variety is one of the emerging technologies in the market, which is expected to witness high adoption in the future.
“The majority of NAND flash vendors such as Samsung, Toshiba, and SanDisk have started investing in the market, which is expected to drive the demand for 3D NAND during the forecast period. The penetration rate of 3D NAND in the Global NAND Flash market is expected to increase to 80 percent by 2018,” says Ghaus.
To determine the scenario for these vendors in the next 3-4 years, TechNavio analysts have conducted in-depth analysis of the impact of market drivers, challenges and trends featuring data on product segmentations, vendor shares, growth rate by revenue and an evaluation of the different buying criteria in the order of importance.
