concert:nova presents RE:BEL Music

concert:nova, Cincinnati’s most innovative chamber music ensemble, is presenting RE:BEL Music on April 6th, 2014 at Rhinegeist in Over-The-Rhine.

CINCINNATI - March 7, 2014 - PRLog -- concert:nova performs at the Rhinegeist Brewery a program of rebel music. The program features composers who created music that was totally new and completely theirs. From CPE Bach, Claude Debussy and Luciano Berio to John Cage and Morton Feldman, these exciting musical rebels not only broke the mold but entirely build the worlds in which they lived.

John Cage, described as an artistic anarchist, used blenders, star charts and radios to push the envelope. Igor Stravinsky brought modernity and changes of style while keeping his own distinctive and essential identity. Claude Debussy rejected his “impressionist” tag and radically embraced instead the Symbolist movement of French poets. Other works performed will be of parodist Erik Satie, avant-garde Luciano Berio, graphic composer Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and the radical Morton Feldman. The program finale is a concert:nova commission from Constantin Caravassilis, a work for 8 musicians named “Proses Lyriques” after the work of the same title by Debussy.

The featured star, countertenor Michael Maniaci, makes his career an act of rebellion by achieving critical acclaim as a male singer with a soprano voice.  Possessing a unique male soprano voice, Maniaci is noted for his unusual ability to sing into the upper soprano register without using falsetto. Maniaci is becoming an important presence on the international classical music scene, having already appeared in lead roles at companies such as the Metropolitan Opera, La Fenice, and Opera North. He is known mostly for singing the works of Handel, Mozart, and Monteverdi. Constantine Caravassilis is an accomplished Greek composer, pianist and conductor living in Toronto. Driven by emotion, beauty and spirituality, and inspired by the worlds of nature and literature Caravassilis’ evocative music is intimately connected to his Hellenic roots. His work Rébellion is written for Michael Maniaci, commissioned by concert:nova and based on the Proses Lyrique text by Claude Debussy.

concert:nova will also be hosting a scrumptious Rhinegeist-infused 3-course dinner dreamed up by Jeff Thomas, a creative re:bel cocktail and Rhinegeist beer, then guests will enjoy preferred seating at the performance. Engaging art installations and entertainments on the walls keep all senses alive in between courses.
