OJAI, Calif. - Dec. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- The Ventura County Public Works Agency constructed new sidewalks along Lamier Avenue, Vine Street and Sunset Avenue, connecting existing sidewalks and bus stops along a route to Sunset School.

The construction was done to improve the safety of students and pedestrians after Agency officials met with officials from districts with schools in the unincorporated County to determine where safety improvements were needed.

"Sunset School’s Principal expressed concern for the safety of students who were walking in the street prior to the sidewalks,” explained Alison Sweet, engineering manager with the Ventura County Public Works Agency, Transportation Department. “Now students can feel safer walking to school.

The new sidewalk has been placed behind the curbs, within County road right-of-way, directly affecting 30 properties whose property owners had placed landscaping in this area; however, Sweet states they were cooperative in removing their improvements for the new sidewalk.

The project was partially funded by Transportation Development Act (TDA) funds, which are a quarter cent of the general sales tax given to the Counties for projects for pedestrian and bicycle facilities, as well as transit services. The project was successful in receiving $100,000 in TDA funds.

The construction of the sidewalk began in mid-September and was completed at the end of November.
