Art By Pablo Picasso, Fremont Ellis Up For Auction In November

Santa Fe galleries put rare European and Southwestern works on the block

SANTA FE, N.M. - Nov. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Santa Fe, NM—A diverse selection of more than 100 pieces of fine art by notable historic and contemporary artists will be up for sale in an online-only auction on Artfact.com (http://www.artfact.com/auction-house/matthews-art-auctions-clfqllozi2) now through November 17. The European, American and Southwestern Art Auction by Matthews Auctions features important work drawn from both private collections and four Santa Fe art galleries, including prints by revolutionary modernists Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso, and paintings by legendary Southwestern artists Fremont Ellis and William Lumpkins.

A Lautrec print, a rare third state lithograph estimated at $38,000-$48,000, was commissioned by French publication La Plume for an international exhibition of posters at the Salon des Cent. “La Passagere du 54” shows a woman lounging on a steamboat and contemplating the sea. Lautrec completed sketches that inspired the print on a cruise in France, where he fell for the haughty passenger from cabin 54 and tried in vain to capture her attention. The lithograph’s provenance is just as storied; the work was exhibited in a survey of Lautrec’s posters at Atlanta’s High Museum in 1998.

Two prints by Pablo Picasso are also up for sale, including an etching made just two years before the artist’s death. “Untitled (From the 156 Suite, 16 mai 1971)” (est. $6,000-$9,000) shows a shocked Edgar Degas witnessing erotic escapades at a Parisian brothel, a playful jab at the Impressionist master and a window into Picasso’s persistent and voracious sexual appetite.

Historic Southwestern art featured in the show includes an exceptional oil painting by one of the “Los Cinco Pintores” group, Fremont Ellis (1897-1985). “Autumn by the River” (est. $16,000-$20,000) was painted in the 1950s and shows a stand of golden aspens beside a New Mexico river scene with a craggy mountain range rising high above it.

A series of never-before-seen artworks by Santa Fe modernist William Lumpkins (1909-2002), recently released from the collection of a Lumpkins family member, will exclusively premiere in the sale. The body of work includes watercolors, a series of experimental felt-tip pen drawings done in the 1970s and four serigraphs of abstract landscapes from the 1960s.

Important historic works by Paul Gauguin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Ernest Blumenschein, Francesco Spicuzza, George Grosz, Salvador Dali, Roberto Matta, Charles Partridge Adams, Mikhail Bogatyrev, Bettina Steinke, Bertram Hartman, Hannah Holliday Stewart, John McHugh, Jack Merriott  and more will also appear on the auction block. Contemporary lots include works by Paul Shapiro, Pascal, Nigel Conway, Carlos Hall, CJ Wells, David Parish, Ron Adams, Eli Levin, Lebadang, Charlie Burk, Harold Joe Waldrum, Forrest Moses, Matthew Frederick, Earl B. Lewis, Eric G. Thompson, Frank Morbillo, Michael von Helms, Jamie Chase, Robert W. Hinds and Doug Higgins.
