Your skylight has to be properly sealed onto the roof or there will be cracks and gaps where water can find a way into your home. Cracked Skylights – Acrylic dome skylights are much more likely to crack than glass skylights because plastic becomes brittle over time. Typically a glass skylight would have to be hit by an object before it cracks. Either way you don’t want a skylight that has cracks. It allows heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter and, of course, can allow moisture in. Also glass skylights that have cracks are unstable and should be addressed right away. Skylights that are cracked need to be replaced. If the base of the skylight is still in good condition, than only the top will need to be replaced.
