Awareness Walk Allows Parents to Tread the Steps Their Children Could Not Take

Parents who have lost infants join together for support in memorial walk.

EDMONTON, Alberta - Oct. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Edmonton, AB When someone experiences the death of a baby, one of the most difficult aspects of dealing with the loss is the realization that they are also robbed of life's most basic experiences—like those first precious steps that mark the beginning of their child’s exploration of the world. It's something with which local artist Alexis Marie Chute is too well-acquainted. But she hopes that her participation in the October 5th Baby Steps Memorial Walk will help open up the dialogue and create stronger support networks for the bereaved.

Chute's own loss of her child Zachary shortly after his birth in 2010 fundamentally altered her life in ways she could never have imagined. But while she had no shortage of friends and family around to support her, she sometimes found it difficult for them to fully empathize with her.

"The emotional impact of losing a child is something that I wish no one ever had to experience. The death of your baby can be incredibly isolating. And though they mean well, people can often be insensitive to what you're going through."

"When a baby passes away, or they are stillborn or miscarried, others don't always think of that child as having had a life. It's not unheard of for parents to hear 'Well, you can have another one”," says Chute. "But to the parent, it makes no difference what age that child was when they passed—the loss is just as profound."

It's one of the reasons Chute is pleased to have the opportunity to share her own experience with others as the keynote speaker at the memorial walk being organized by H.E.A.R.T.S., a baby loss recovery program. She's also touched by the sentiment guiding the walk.

"I find it beautifully fitting that we will be doing a walk celebrating the babies we lost too soon. That first step is such a landmark for a parent, and in taking those steps for our children, we pay tribute to the memory of their short lives." Chute hopes to encourage those present with what she has learned about finding healing and strength over the last three years.

The Baby Steps Memorial Walk at Broadmoor Lake in Sherwood Park takes place on October 5th at 12:30pm  Registration information is available at www.BabyStepsWalk.com (https://www.mailoutinteractive.com/Industry/Redirect.aspx...).
