Follow on Google News | Supermarket Superstar Features New Food Industry TechBy: Senspire The latest food-themed reality television program premiered on the Lifetime Network in July. The show promises to introduce the public to a variety of food product entrepreneurs, each of whom will face down a panel of judges for the change to win a $10,000 cash prize and $100,000 worth of professional product development. While the contestants are each sure to catch the audience’s attention with their unique back stories and business plans, the entire season features another debut that may have escaped the notice of casual viewers so far. But this supporting player boasts its own entrepreneurial vision and may have as bright a future in the food industry as the winning contestants. The Flavor Studio software suite, a brainchild of the Palo Alto, California-based company Senspire, appears regularly on computer screens in the Supermarket Superstar episodes. Conceived as an all-purpose tool for the food product development industry, Flavor Studio assists the show’s contestants in completing tasks with the support of their mentors. When required to calculate retail pricing for new products, contestants simply need to enter their ingredients into the program, and Flavor Studio determines total production costs for them. The same lists of ingredients can be used to calculate and display complete nutritional information for finished products. But the features presented on Supermarket Superstar are only a fraction of what Flavor Studio is capable of, according to Gregory Willis, the founder and president of Senspire. “The main idea behind Flavor Studio was to use math to unravel the culinary mysteries of nature,” says Willis. In pursuit of this vision, the software includes information from nearly a million recipes and uses it to give food product developers a better idea of what ingredients taste good together, and why. “Even if you’ve never heard of a particular ingredient, you can enter an ingredient into Flavor Studio and see a complete list of compatible flavors,” says Willis. By adding more ingredients and narrowing down the list, the software and its user can build an entire complex recipe from scratch. If Flavor Studio is capable of putting encyclopedic knowledge of food at the fingertips of even the most amateur chefs, there is no telling how it could be used by industry professionals and committed entrepreneurs like the contestants and judges on Supermarket Superstar. Perhaps future episodes will show off its full functionality to both the contestants and the viewers. In the meantime, food industry professionals can schedule an online demonstration of the product through the Senspire website. And those interested in watching Supermarket Superstar can tune in to Lifetime on Thursdays at 10:30pm ET/PT.
