LEWIS CENTER, Ohio - Aug. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- “Yankees Heroes” by Carroll Conklin recalls the best (and a couple of the worst) of the New York Yankees baseball players during the 1960s.

For today’s Yankees fans, it’s an easy-to-read introduction to past stars like Elston Howard, Ralph Terry and Tom Tresh. For fans who were there, Yankees Heroes will bring back memories of Yankee Stadium afternoons in the 1960s.

The book profiles 63 of the infielders, outfielders, catchers and pitchers who played for the New York Yankees in the 1960s. Some of the players featured in the book are:

Ø  Mickey Mantle, the Hall of Fame outfielder who was the 1962 American League MVP … despite missing 30 games.

Ø  Whitey Ford, the Hall of Fame left-hander who didn’t have a 20-win season until 1961 … at the age of 32.

Ø  Bobby Richardson, the Gold Glove second baseman who was a 5-time All-Star and a World Series Most Valuable Player.

Ø  Mel Stottlemyre, the Yankee right-hander who won 20 games three times in the 1960s … and lost 20 once.

Ø  Roger Maris, the All-Star outfielder who led the American League in RBIs (and a couple other slugging categories) in 1961.

The book also lists the All-Stars and league leaders who played for the New York Yankees during the 1960s, as well as ranking the franchise leaders in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, pitching victories, strikeouts and earned run average for the decade.

According to Conklin, the New York Yankees of the early 1960s ranked among the best teams in baseball history. “When the Yankees were winning five consecutive pennants from 1960 through 1964, they fielded a collection of talent unmatched in the American League,” the author stated.

“At their best, the Yankees were outstanding in every facet of the game – hitting, pitching and defense,” Conklin added. ”They produced the league Most Valuable Player for four straight years. They were the teams that every other team’s fans loved to hate, because they were so good.”
