LEWIS CENTER, Ohio - Sept. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- “Orioles Heroes” by Carroll Conklin recalls the best (and a couple of the worst) of the Baltimore Orioles baseball players during the 1960s.

For today’s Orioles fans, it’s an easy-to-read introduction to past stars like Steve Barber, Jim Gentile and Mike Cuellar. For fans who were there, Orioles Heroes will bring back memories of baseball afternoons at Memorial Stadium in the 1960s.

The book profiles 66 of the infielders, outfielders, catchers and pitchers who played for the Baltimore Orioles in the 1960s.

Some of the players featured in the book are:

-   Brooks Robinson, the Gold Glove third baseman who was a 15-time All-Star and 1964 Most Valuable Player.

-   Boog Powell, the hard-hitting first baseman who was a 4-time All-Star and hit 303 home runs for the Orioles.

-   Luis Aparicio, the shortstop who led the league in stolen bases 9 times and earned 9 Gold Gloves (2 in Baltimore).

-   Frank Robinson, the All-Star outfielder who led the American League in RBIs (and a couple other hitting categories) in 1966.

-   Hoyt Wilhelm, the bullpen ace who won 17 games in 3 seasons as a reliever for the Orioles, and won 26 games in 2 seasons as a starter … including a no-hitter.

The book also lists the All-Stars and league leaders who played for the Baltimore Orioles during the 1960s, as well as ranking the franchise leaders in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, pitching victories, strikeouts and earned run average for the decade.

According to Conklin, the Baltimore Orioles started the 1960s with one of the best pitching staffs in the American League. “When the hitting caught up with the pitching, especially with the arrival of Frank Robinson and the emergence of Boog Powell, the result was a World Series Championship in 1966, and a franchise that was a solid contender into the next decade,” the author stated.

“The Orioles teams of that decade were loaded with talent. Six players destined for the Hall of Fame wore Orioles uniforms in the 1960s,” Conklin added.
