New Baseball Book Celebrates the Philadelphia Phillies of the 1960s

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio - Sept. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- “Phillies Heroes” by Carroll Conklin recalls the best (and a couple of the worst) of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball players during the 1960s.

For today’s Phillies fans, it’s an easy-to-read introduction to Philadelphia stars of the 1960s like Dick Allen, Don Demeter and Art Mahaffey. For fans who were there, Phillies Heroes will bring back memories of baseball at Connie Mack Stadium in the 1960s.

The book profiles 72 of the infielders, outfielders, catchers and pitchers who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1960s. Some of the players featured in the book are:

-  Jim Bunning, the Phillies ace who won 57 games in 3 seasons, one of them perfect.

-  Johnny Callison, the slugging right fielder who was a 3-time All-Star in the 1960s and led the National League in triples twice (and doubles once).

-  Tony Taylor, the All-Star second baseman who finished in the top 10 in stolen bases 7 straight years.

-  Chris Short, the left-handed fireballer who struck out 237 batters in 1965, and was the team’s only 20-game winner during the 1960s.

-  Tony Gonzalez, the center fielder who twice led the National League in fielding, but never won a Gold Glove, and 3 times garnered votes for MVP, but never was an All-Star.

The book also lists the All-Stars and league leaders who played for the Phillies during the 1960s, as well as listing the franchise leaders in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, pitching victories, strikeouts and earned run average for the decade.

According to Conklin, the Philadelphia Phillies were an exciting and often frustrating team for their loyal fans in the 1960s. “The Phillies started the decade of the 1960s as the National League’s worst team, then turned it all around within a couple seasons … only to suffer that horrible collapse in September of 1964, when they seemingly had the pennant in hand,” Conklin stated.

“Throughout the 1960s, the team was loaded with talent,” the author added. “No matter how often the Phillies may have broken their fans’ hearts, the teams of the 1960s never lost their fans’ affection.”
