HIGH WYCOMBE, U.K. - July 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Dolch sight words are a tool widely used in education, especially by teachers introducing children to reading, and in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.  Basically, they are set of common words, most of which cannot be sounded out phonetically, that new readers must learn to recognize and read by sight, in order to achieve reading fluency.

The Dolch sight word list originates in 1948 from work done by Edward William Dolch, PhD, and was first described in his book “Problems in Reading”.  Dr Dolch compiled the word list by analyzing a wide range of children’s literature of the period.  From his researches, he was able to produce a list of 220 “service” words (which he subdivided into five levels of difficulty), and an additional list of 95 common nouns.

The DolchSightWords.org contains all six Dolch sight word lists (pre-primer, primer, first grade, second grade, third grade, and nouns), as well as descriptions of classroom activities for improving children’s reading skills using the words.  Also on the website, are links to free printable materials, products that can be purchased containing Dolch sight words, and links to other helpful websites for teaching reading.
