By: Rick Giese -- SeniorsRealEstateHelp.org From the Home Safety Council, here are 10 things you can do to help ensure the seniors in your life stay safe, secure and healthy: If there are stairs in the home, be sure there are handrails on both sides of the steps. Be sure there are nightlights in the bedroom, hall and bathroom, and lights at both the top and bottom of stairways. Remove small rugs from around the house, or at least be sure they are securely taped to the floor. Install grab bars in the tub and shower. Check to see that non-slip mats or strips are installed in all tubs and showers, and be sure the bath mats have non-skid bottoms. To prevent accidental scalding, set the water heater at 120 degrees, or just below the medium setting. Have heaters, stoves and fireplaces checked by a service person each year to be sure they are operating properly. Check the medicine cabinet for expired medicines. Also, check with the senior’s doctor once a year. Keep a current list of prescribed medications and spot-check every now and then to be sure they are being taken regularly. Be sure all smoke alarms are working, and replace batteries at least once each year. • Seniors should know to call 911 to reach emergency help. If frailty or mobility is a problem, consider subscribing to an emergency response system such as Life Alert.
