By: Tees Active Di Wilson, Aquatics Manager for Tees Active said “There will be an action-packed week of activities in the water with a host of fun and educational events, including learning how to help others in danger and recognizing when somebody is in trouble. On dry land there will also be a number of activities including how to perform CPR (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) Get Safe is a campaign to provide young people with basic knowledge of what do when an emergency in the water occurs. With an average of 410 people drowning in the UK a year, these skills could be vital to saving lives. Some of the campaign objectives include raising awareness of the importance of gaining water confidence, raising awareness of water safety and promoting swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle and family activity. The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William has also backed the programme showing his support via video message. Speaking about the importance of children being confident in the water, the Duke also spoke about representing Scottish Universities at water polo and the excitement and pride himself and Catherine felt when cheering on Team GB during last year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
