Home Team Accounting Announces New Accounting Inspiration Blog Post - When Zero Equals Nothing

"Preceding zeros cause duplicate entries, botch search efforts and made my spreadsheets messy. And you all know how we feel about messy spreadsheets. I know we like crunching numbers, but we don’t need to crunch ALL the numbers." - Jana Rzezniczek

July 3, 2013 - PRLog -- In the world of mathematics, zero has all these very deep and complex meanings, and all sorts of weird effects and interactions inside equations. It bridges the gap between positive and negative integers, makes things infinite. In software it is actually language. Honestly, we number crunchers don’t care. We kind of have it easy with zero. Put a currency sign in front of it and it truly means nothing. Sure, there could be some conclusion extracted from analysis, but when we count, zero is nothing. But it leads me to wonder, when I see so many entries, when I look at so many file folders, or even when I look at correspondence, why preceding zeros seem to pop up everywhere.

When we see preceding zeros on checks, for instance, those are simply place holders to tell what ever system is being used that it’s got some room to grow. Remember for us data peoples, zero means nothing. When you receive a check payment for an AR client and the check number has preceding zeros, those are not part of the check number, those are simply place holders. If you receive and AP bill and the invoice number has preceding zeros, those are not for us. When you receive a purchase order, nope! Real numbers only please.
