Despite competing, it was definitely not all work as some of Bondi’s most famous lifeguards visited Port Douglas this weekend as part of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival.

June 13, 2013 - PRLog -- While the boys from Bondi were in the region primarily to take part in the sporting events, they still managed to find time to meet the locals, experience the Great Barrier Reef, hand feed a crocodile and promote water safety at a local school.

Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree (TPDD) executive officer said Doug Ryan having the boys who included Andrew Reid, Adriel Young and Corey Oliver, in town was a real highlight for the athletes as well as for those who came to celebrate at the after party at the Central Hotel on Sunday night.

“It was great to see them involved. Corey competed in the RRR Mountain Bike Challenge, Andrew in the Coral Coast Triathlon, and Adriel in the Hekili Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge.

“The boys had a fantastic time and even said, they would be more than happy to work on 4 Mile Beach, ‘ Mr Ryan added. Happy to oblige the local ladies, the boys even bared their chests during a stint as guest barman, at the Central Hotel after party.

The boy’s action filled itinerary organised by TPDD also included visits to Mossman Gorge, with a welcome to country smoking ceremony and showing their skills at Shake-a leg or aboriginal dancing. They also learnt some of skills required for traditional hunting with Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours.

“This was a real highlight for them. They really enjoyed walking through the mud, and learning how to throw a spear and hunt while stalking and observing wildlife and country.”

An important part of the visit was also to promote the water safety message and if the legion of fans at St Augustine's school in Mossman was anything to go, that message was well and truly heard.

“The boys said it was best school they have ever been too – the kids were totally mesmerised and were screaming in welcome – it was just fantastic to have them interact with the students and to comment that they were impressed with the knowledge of water safety,” Mr Ryan added.

The trio will remain in Tropical North Queensland for another week as they compete in the 70.3 Ironman as a team this weekend.

The filming of the Bondi Boys will be televised on Channel 10, July 7 at 3pm.
