May 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Satrap Darabi, a well-known blogger who writes about personal finance has just published a guide on how to save money on utility bills on BlogStash.com.

Satrap Darabi is a vocal supporter of low-cost and simple energy improvements to all homes. He is confident that such simple changes can result in savings of almost 25% on the average energy bill. "Most visitors to my site are surprised when they get to know that most of the improvements related to home energy are quite affordable", notes Darabi who's "20 Ways to Save Money on Utility Bills" can be seen at http://www.blogstash.com/how-to-save-money-on-utilities/. "Many also report seeing an immediate saving in their own regular utility bills."

Satrap says he always advise his readers to broaden their personal finance horizon by keeping up with the leading personal finance blogs and website such as http://money.cnn.com/pf/

Here are 5 simple methods, which according to Satrap, will help you save a significant amount on your energy bills for the year:

1. Make sure the furnace gets serviced every couple of years. Inefficient equipment and their resulting operation can inflate an energy bill by almost 10-15%. It's literally akin to burning your money for warmth.

2. Periodically examine, and change if need be, the filters of your home's cooling and heating systems. When there is not enough circulation of air in these systems, a higher energy bill and poor quality of air at home are unavoidable. Those are important reasons for you to put some dough into good filters.

3. Air infiltration can be prevented by caulking and sealing the doors and windows on all sides. You also need to check if there are outer gaps at places where the A/C lines enter the home apart from other doors. If there is any worn out weather stripping, replace it instantly.

4. Exhaust fans (which have a gap in their form box) and recessed lights are the biggest culprits of air leakage in any home. You can rectify this by placing a board box made of foam around all sockets. However, make sure the light is encircled by a clearance of at least 6 inches.

5. If your home has a fireplace, make sure to shut the damper if the fireplace is not used. This is to help prevent the drawing of conditioned air up the fireplace's flue. Darabi also recommends the installation of glass doors that are insulated in the fireplace. This is to prevent drawing of the interior air into the entry point whenever you use the fireplace.
