Chicagoland Special Spaces Partners With New Trier Student To Provide Bedroom Makeover To Palatine G

Special Spaces Chicagoland, a not-for-profit that creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical conditions, will be conducting a complete room makeover for a 6 year-old Palatine girl, Kennedy Khalminski, on Wednesday, May 15 2013.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - May 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Kennedy was diagnosed with ALL B-Cell Leukemia in February of 2012. She currently undergoing a two and a half year treatment protocol scheduled to end in August of 2014. Kennedy is a Kindergarten student and she likes to play with her friends, do gymnastics and dance, go boating in the summer and ski in the winter.  She is the daughter of Edan Galt and Gene Khalminski.  Her room makeover theme is a vintage princess style room that is white, silver and gold with swirls and roses.
Special Spaces Chicagoland depends on donations, partnerships and volunteers to complete room makeovers. New Trier Township High School student and Special Spaces intern Georgia Papadatos’ efforts were essential for the completion of Kennedy’s room.  She helped plan, design and coordinate the makeover as well as organizing the fundraising efforts for the room.   She sold coupons that offered 10% off at a local salon and collected both private and corporate donations from the area.  In total, $3,000 was raised to fund Kennedy’s dream room. According to Special Spaces Chicagoland director Kelly Knox, “Georgia truly cares about this child and cares about humanity and children in general. We are very grateful to have her work with us to create a special room for Kennedy.”

Naperville resident Kelly Knox founded the Special Spaces Chicagoland chapter in 2012. This room makeover is the chapter’s fourth. The organization’s goal is to create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. The focus is answering one question:  Where does a child go when battling a serious illness to find peace and comfort?  A bedroom of course.  According to Knox, “A bedroom to most kids is a personal space—a place that represents his or her unique personality. For a child with a critical illness who spends a lot of time at home in his or her room, that room should be a very special space.  A place of comfort and refuge.  A place that inspires and gives hope.”

The Chicagoland chapter has many other room makeovers scheduled in the next year for children in need. Follow the progress on Facebook at “Special Spaces Chicagoland”.  For details about this special organization go to  http://www.specialspaces.org.  For more information on how you can volunteer or make a donation, please contact kellyk@specialspaces.org.

Special Spaces National was founded in July 2004 on the precedent that children battling life-threatening illnesses need their own special space. This is a place of hope, inspiration and a special space to find peace and comfort. A Special Spaces, a 501 C (3) non-profit, has created hundreds of bedrooms across the country. It is the vision of our organization to have a Special Spaces Director everywhere there is a child in need.
