WORTH, Ill. - March 12, 2015 - PRLog -- Carter’s tumor has caused partial paralysis on his left side. He can walk but his motor skills are limited. He loves people and taking pictures, drawing and most of all Mustang cars. His room theme will be fun and colorful, and incorporate his favorite car.

To help complete makeovers, Special Spaces depends on donations from individuals, local businesses, groups and even other foundations. To create Carter’s room Special Spaces turned to The Land of Nod, a Chicago-based national children’s furniture and home décor retailer, to design and donate all products for Carter’s new room. They will also be sprucing up big brother Nathan’s room.

“At The Land of Nod, we celebrate childhood. The work that Special Spaces does for children across the country is inspiring and we’re privileged to take part in helping to create environments where children can feel safe and, most importantly, get back to being a kid,” says Michelle Kohanzo, Managing Director, The Land of Nod. The Land of Nod will be providing all funds for creating Carter’s space, including furniture and home décor products. Nod employees will also assist with the renovation.

Naperville resident Kelly Knox founded the Special Spaces Chicagoland chapter in 2012. Since its inception, over a twenty ill children have gotten room makeovers. Knox has a full slate scheduled for 2015 and a waiting list is in place for many more deserving children. The organization’s goal is to create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. The focus is answering one question: Where does a child go when battling a serious illness to find peace and comfort? A bedroom of course. According to Knox, “A bedroom to most kids is a personal space—a place that represents his or her unique personality. For a child with a critical illness who spends a lot of time at home in his or her room, that room should be a very special space.  A place of comfort and refuge.  A place that inspires and gives hope.”

The Chicagoland chapter has room makeovers scheduled on a monthly basis for children in need. Follow the progress on Facebook at “Special Spaces Chicagoland”.
