By: Karunesh Kesarwani's poems surprise us by speaking of love in new ways. This is certainly not an easy thing to accomplish. Poets who try usually approach the subject of love in oblique ways, with a touch of world-weariness, or cynicism, or even bitterness—some type of defensiveness against the inevitable loss that accompanies all love. Not Iti Kesarwani. The honesty and authenticity and charm of these poems reside in their straight-forward expression. Certainly there are notes of sadness, but these do not dampen the spirit of these poems nor mar their delicacy. I often felt, as I read these poems, that Kesarwani was able to describe in new ways the agony and ecstasy of love. "Not just your presence but absence too / Melts my heart," she writes in "You melt me." "Daily I die, the magic reincarnates me," is a sublime line in "Love me one more time." I am always taken with how language that is seemingly so simple, with just a small rearrangement or addition of words, can feel fresh. What Kesarwani has tapped into here is the metaphorical relationship between language and love—at once ancient, at once innovative; at once hurtful, at once regenerative; Anyone who has known love, known heartache, will see themselves, hear themselves, find themselves in the pages of Thousand Words in Million Silent Ways.
