Gulliver Swim Team Shines at Speedo Southern Sectionals

Jana Mangimelli Crowned Sectional Champion in Two Events at Swim Meet
 
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - April 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Coral Gables, Fla. – A group of six Gulliver Swim Club senior swimmers distinguished themselves in competition this month at the Speedo Southern Zone Sectional Championships at the Fort Lauderdale Hall of Fame Aquatics Complex.

The meet featured teams from all over the country, and all over the world. Some of the names competing at the meet included Olympic Gold Medalists and World Record Holders Ryan Lochte and Cesar Cielo from Brazil, and other international Olympians, including Alia Atkinson from Jamaica, Adreina Pinto from Venezuela, Carolina Colorado from Colombia, Felipe Lima from Brazil, Joseph Schooling from Singapore and Blake Worsley and Martha McCabe both from Canada.

NCAA All-American and U.S. Olympic Trials Finalist Jana Mangimelli, who has swam for Gulliver since December, was crowned the Speedo Sectional Champion in two individual events, the 200 Individual Medley and the 200 Breaststroke. Jana’s 200 Individual Medley time currently ranks her seventh in the United States while her 200 Breaststroke time currently places her eighth in the country.

Gulliver swimmers Namilla Sanchez, Natalie Aulicino and Niki Urquidi all qualified and competed in the Championship final heats of their respective individual events as well. Sanchez’s times in the 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 400 Free and 800 Free currently rank her sixth, ninth, ninth and 10th in the State of Florida for 15-16 Girls while Aulicino’s time in the 200 Butterfly currently ranks her sixth in the State of Florida.

Lastly, Brooke Ellis’ time in the 100 Fly at the Sectional Meet also places her within the State’s Top 10 times, currently ranking her ninth for 13-14 Girls. Swimmer Ricky Hermida made personal best times in all three of his individual events: 500 Free, 100 Breast and 200 Individual Medley.

“I am extremely proud of the way the swimmers competed this past weekend,” said Jeff Poppell, Gulliver’s aquatics director and head swimming coach. “I am very excited about the personal improvements that have been made over such a short period of time. Several of our athletes were able to take their own swimming to new levels while having the opportunity to compete against some of the top swimmers from around the country and around the world.”
