Local Home Care Company Stresses the Importance of Making Health Food Choices

March 5, 2013 - PRLog -- San Mateo,  CA  March  5, 2013 – Growing up, your parents probably told you over and over again to eat your vegetables in order to be big and strong. In light of March being National Nutrition Month, Home Helpers of San Mateo County is educating the local community on how families can help each other remain healthy by making smart food choices.

While vegetables play a large role in eating healthy, there are many other factors that people must be aware of, such as choosing lean meats, drinking more water, eating high protein meals to help you feel full longer, as well as cutting back on processed foods.

“As a company that works with senior citizens and their families on a daily basis, we understand how important it is to make healthy eating choices, especially as you get older,” said Mitch Williams, owner of Home Helpers of San Mateo County. “Sometimes the hardest part of eating healthy is figuring out what’s good for you and what items you should avoid. It is important for families to jump on board as a team so that each family member can act as a positive role model.”

Home Helpers of San Mateo County is educating the community on how they can make the smart food choices by offering the following tips:

Start a food journal – This is the best way to get started. Make sure to keep track of everything you eat for a week, how hungry you were before eating, as well as the time of day. Once you record a week’s worth of food, look up the nutritional values for each item and assess where some changes need to be made.
Watch your carb intake – While we all love our carbohydrates, the amount you digest can really play a role on your weight. The more sedentary you are, the less your intake should be.
Make smart choices at the grocery store – If you have ever gone grocery shopping while hungry, you may have found yourself buying anything and everything. Eat a snack before you go to assist in making healthy food choices. That way, you will be more likely to buy wholesome food items, versus snack foods and ready-to-eat items that will immediately satisfy your hunger.
It is alright to eat out – Let’s face it. Sometimes we don’t want to cook and want to enjoy a nice meal at our favorite restaurant. You can control your hunger and get necessary nutrients by starting with a salad. If you decide to order a sandwich, branch out and try it on wheat bread. Lastly, if you see something on the menu that is appealing, but it is fried, ask the server if you can get it steamed or grilled.
