Feb. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Smart Energy Universe (SEU) has just released a special report: “Wireless Smart Utility Systems and Network”. The Smart Grid can help utilities conserve energy, reduce costs, increase reliability and transparency, and make processes more efficient. Smart utility networks are an important component of the Smart Grid as they help manage and control the distribution segment of the Grid. Because of these advantages, smart grid activity among utilities is growing rapidly around the world. SEU’s special report is timely and geared to provide an understanding of smart utility systems and networks based on wireless mesh networking technology.

Utilities around the world are implementing smart utility networks to strengthen an aging electricity grid.  Smart Grid renovation is well underway in the US, Europe ,China and Australia. Momentum is picking up everywhere in the world. For example: the UK is working on a major implementation, and has just released Smart Meter Technical Specifications;  Japan’s major electric utility, TEPCO, has issued an RFP for implementing a massive smart utility network(s) covering up to 29 million nodes (smart meters). Market forecasts are projecting that the networks to be deployed by the end of 2013 will cover over 50 million smart meters.

Smart utility networks using wireless mesh networking technology have seen the largest implementation to date . However, other systems based on Cellular technology, Powerline Communications (PLC), WiLAN, and WiMax, are also being used for backhaul communication.

The special report discusses the network architecture, system and network components, and comparison of different technology options. The report also addresses the standards being used for these networks. While the main focus is on electric utilities, water and gas distribution networks are also addressed.

Smart Utility networks support a number of applications ranging from reading of energy consumption at end-points, consumption/demand monitoring and control in the distribution segment, outage detection and restoral in the distribution grid, with more on the horizon. The SEU report addresses these applications, with a discussion of how they are implemented.

The report is useful to all those involved in the smart grid/smart energy business. It provides a basic understanding of the network and sensor technologies deployed in the utility distribution network, and the applications they are being used for. Further, the report addresses the utilization of IPv6 in these networks. Standards are an important element and the report addresses the international standards utilized in these networks, and test and certification process employed.
