Omar Kuddus: Urgent need for help relocating endangered Ugandan LGBT Coalition member

Omar Kuddus is calling out for help for Ugandan LGBT coalition member

Feb. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- A member of the Ugandan LGBT coalition called Elijah from Mbarara had his photos at Uganda gay pride leaked and the local authorities summoned him, told him to leave his home village forever.

His charity kindergarten school is closed now for fear that he will recruit their children to homosexuality.

He wanted to commit suicide Monday but the director at born this way Uganda Robert talked him out of it.

They are appealing for help in relocating him because he has no place to stay.

Robert Equality (https://www.facebook.com/robert.equality.7?group_id=0) is asking for help stating :

"We need to raise at least 100$  so that we can help move Elijah Relocate to Kampala because they already gave him a letter banishing him from his home village Mbarara We need to help him because his life is in danger.”

Elijah is from an organization called Together Against Discrimination (TADU) in Mbarara.
Together they formed up a coalition of six LGBTI organisation; Born This Way Uganda (BTWU), TADU, Accept Uganda, St.Paul's Voice Centre (SPAVOC), GEHO and Bravo Youth.

I was told and appealed for help being told [we] “will be glad if we don't lose a life. Together we can make Uganda a better country for LGBT people.”

This is the effect of the proposed Ugandan Kill bill and shows the effect it has on Ugandan LGBTs lives when they tragically attempt to commit suicide when they see no other option.

The movement up the order of the bill to number 6 on the business to follow has shown and sent out a clear message regarding its stance on Homosexuality once again to the world.

In Uganda, with the impending introduction of the Bill LGBTs are being forced into exile due to their fear that if the bill becomes law, homosexuality will be punishable by death , which has resulted in people leaving and seeking asylum  based on their sexuality.

The unconfirmed reports that Uganda may have introduced the kill bill as early as yesterday adds to this concern, as the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law has posted on twitter (https://twitter.com/Ugandans4rights/status/30094690092279...): ‘JUST IN: #UgandaParliament wants to debate the
#AntiHomosexualityBill this week could be any day from tomorrow Feb 12. Follow us for updates’.This tweet revised an earlier twitter update (https://twitter.com/Ugandans4rights/status/30094439571954...) that simply stated that the debate is to occur tomorrow.

Kaliisa Elijah in a personal interview told me that “in last two years I have worked with Rain Bow Health Foundation Mbarara but currently am working with Together Against Discrimination Uganda and five other organisations as a coalition called Centre For Gender economic Equality and Justice Uganda(CEFGEEJU) headed by Robert from Born This Way Uganda. With R.B.H.F.M, I worked as an administrator and now with T.A.D.U, am working as a secretary for the organisation.

I started this work of activism since year 2011 up to today, these are two years I have been serving as an activist in rural areas of western Uganda.

I have been portraying this work through different activities - through music, dancing and dramas.

This has been done on different Gay occasions and also through giving stories about my gay life through my life stile these were and are educative and encouraging stories  to different people. These would take place  for example on AIDS world day in Kampala, in some workshops organized by smug and Kasha.

I have been also organizing for gay meetings teaching and educating them that to be born gay its not a crime and it is not by any ones choice, telling gay community on how to exercise their rights on getting equal health medical care.

I have been doing this with the help of some medical doctors from Murago referral hospital in Kampala who are under mapi murago.  I have sent many gay people for health care help and I have been distributing condoms and lubs to gay people mostly in western Uganda in the following districts Kabale,Ntungamo, Mbarara and even to Kigali Rwanda.

When the beach pride was opening here in Uganda I attended as I was ready to present my music but we were stopped by the Police men in Entebe.

Also am a member of talented kucu this is a group of gay who are talented in both music, dance and drums.

On the group launch day as soon as I had finished performing in the dance police would not allow us to continue with our activities. This took place towards the end of last year at national theater in Kampala.

I have been also calling out activities on telling gay communities on how to fight stigma in them even reaching out side Uganda eg to Rwandan gay about their rights this took place in Kigali Rwanda.
I was born in 1978 so am 33 years old am very much feared of my life due to the different threats I have encountered  from different people even some from my own church (that I have been attending for the spiritual growth) both verbal and phone messages of which some are still in my phone. I tried to resend these messages to the leader of security team here in Kampala Uganda called Robert and also to Kasha of farug. These are threatening message of which some say I will be reported to the police and to the whole church congregation about me being a gay and an activist for gay community and even local council has given me a banishing letter sending me away from my village forever.
I am In danger" - Kaliisa Elijah.

I was told today by Robert Equality (https://www.facebook.com/robert.equality.7)
we have to act quickly  as Elijah called me last night saying that he hasn't got anything to eat the whole day. Where he is hiding is a remote area with no electricity that’s why his phone is off. We have to get him out of there URGENTLY."

Of further concern is that with after Pope Benedict XVI's shock resignation due to his ill health, one of the top contenders for the post is Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson. The top three candidates for Pope are all vehemently anti-LGBT.
