An example of this is a golf course which requires a centralized system in order to monitor the huge area it covers.

Majority of the controls are mechanically performed by Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) while the host controls are mostly restricted to certain functions like supervisory level involvement or simple overriding.

The SCADA Architecture

During the early generation, computing is performed by means of mainframe computers alone.  When SCADA was first developed, there was no network existed making it an independent system that had no connection to other systems. RTU vendors later designed the Wide Area Network or WAN so it can communicate with the RTU. During that time, the communication protocols used were usually propriety.
The processing was then distributed to various multiple stations connected by means of LAN when information was shared in real time. Every station had a specific task, allowing the cost and size of each station lesser compared to system utilized during the first generation.

Because of standard protocol usage and due to the fact that a lot of SCADA networked system can already be accessed through the internet, it has become prone to remote system attack. However, the use of standard protocol along with the security techniques indicates an improvement in the security which can be applied to the SCADA systems, in case scheduled updates and maintenance are received.
One big advantage of the SCADA system is that the operators will be able to extract more data from the programmable system controllers. The older method where the operators needed to make individual reading from every flow meter by going around the turf is already a thing of the past.

At present the flows in the golf course will be totaled by the PLC wherein the data can be easily received by the operator even when just seated at his desk comfortably.
