Christy knew she was HIV positive, but her admirers did not. The fear of going for an HIV test and the discrimination that would follow, kept her away from clinics until her death. Christy was a beautiful woman and men paid to have her. Unaware of her HIV status, Mba Ali and others became infected with the virus. Encouraged by his wife, Mba started medication, outlived Christy, and has lived positively with the virus.

Mba abandoned his career to build a 500-bed ward designed to save lives. His inspiring story shows how an HIV-positive diagnosis turned into a positive that has helped others.

About the Author: Jibrin Idris Inuwa is a civil engineer in Nigeria. His works include construction of health centers and hospitals. “HIV awareness is very low in the community where I live.”
