| ![]() The Chevelle - James CopelandLet’s talk about the Chevelle SS which had a regular series of it’s own in 1966 called the SS396s. The SS396s was the high performance version of the Chevelle SS and came equipped with its own line of engines and performance equipment.

During the years 1966 and 1967 there was a limited run of the strut back two door sports coupe with its own model number, 17, as opposed the model number 37 used on the older model 2 door coupes. According to James Copeland the 1968 model year was the first and only year of the SS396 El Camino with its own series/model identification of 13880. Unfortunately the El Camino was only available for that one year-1968. The Chevrolet Chevelle was manufactured from 1964 -1977 and made a lot of money for General Motors as it was one of their most popular cars. The Chevelle automobiles ranged from the average family car to powerful couples or convertibles. After 1977 Malibu took over replacing the Chevelle name. General Motors produced the Chevelle with the idea of competing with the Ford Fairlane. If you look at photos of the earlier design you’ll notice the Chevelle wearing Nova nameplates. The Chevelle paved the way for the Beaumont which was only sold in Canada from the years 1966-1972. The Chevelle offered a 2 door station wagon in 1964 which was the bottom of the line 300 series. James Copeland goes on to mention the two-door hardtop couple and convertible produced from 1964-1972. The two door hardtops were called Sports Coupes adds James. As part of the lineup other models made their appearance such as the utility pickup and the El Camino. According to James Copeland the Chevelle Chassis was the building block for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo which was a successful model. There were exclusive station wagon models offered to the public such as: Nomad, Nomad Custom 1968, Greenbrier, Concours, and Concours Estate. General Motors was at the top of the car chain with these popular models. Many people jumped at the chance to purchase any one of these models.
